The Geek is Back. Sep. 2nd, 2005 @ 08:44 pm
Yes I am returned! TA-DA! Yes everyone can now rejoice and sing merrily for I am back to bestow my blessing and bring good cheer and much merriment to LJ.

Well actually I never really went anywhere, but that doesn't matter. Can you tell it's Friday night and I'm REALLY tired? Well to summarise the last few months since I last posed: works great, works very busy, can I have a holiday yet?

Master!
You are a MASTER of the English language!

Huzzah. While your English is not exactly
perfect, you are still more grammatically
correct than just about every American. Others
admire the way you speak and could learn a lot
from listening to you. Still, there is always
room for improvement...

How grammatically correct are you? (Revised with answer key)

Hooray. May. 24th, 2005 @ 08:30 pm
Yay, I finally got my degree. The actual piece of paper that is. Bit of an anti-climax after all this time, but still it's nice to have it and finally close that chapter of my life.

Went away on the weekend to the Grampians and my little boy was sick the whole weekend. Neverless his determination to have a good time in the bush was amazing. He gets up in the morning full up with the flu and coughing his head off. We get in the car a drive for a while to a nice waterfall, he gets out of the car and promptly vomits everywhere. Less than two minutes later he's all fired up and ready to go walking. We made sure he only did a short walk, but then he complained, between coughs, that he wanted to do something longer. He was so sick, but by god he was going to have a good time.

On another note I also bought him an electronic light-sabre. Awesome toy, wish I had one when I was young. Now if I could only get him to put it down for 2 minutes!

Whew, this working full time thing can't be good for your health. Well a month into it and I can finally get through the week without being unconscious by Friday. It's hard work when you haven't worked full time for 2.5 years. I am enjoying myself immensely though. It's not only great to be back in the full time workforce, but it's awesome to actually have a job that's putting my degree and education in general to use. It's very rewarding knowing that all of the work over the last few years is actually paying off. I've also now officially graduated, so I have letters after my name now. What I'm ever going to use them for I don't know, but I like them anyway. :-)

On a fun note, I bought an iPod with my first pay packet. WOOHOO! THESE THINGS ARE AWESOME. It's only been a few days since I bought it, but already I'm not sure how I ever survived without one. It's a huge pain in the ass getting all my CDs on to it, very slow. I think I might have to invest in a 1394 port.

One thing I've found really interesting is peoples attitudes to me when dressed for work. That is dressed in a suit, and without trying to sound like I'm blowing my own trumpet, I do wear a suit well so I can look extremely professional when I want to. But anyway people in general, but especially in shops, are so much friendlier and helpful than if I was wearing my normal "street" clothes. People really do judge books by their covers, and on extremely superficial grounds. If I notice this much difference just from my suit, I can only imagine what life is like in some sort of minority group. Very sad, and extremely pathetic, that people behave this way.
» Movie sub-titles
I was watching Hero on DVD last night and I'm wondering if movie sub-title translators get paid by the word? In case you haven't seen it yet (do so), there are quite a few martial art fight scences where there's no dialogue, or at least very little. I got the impression during these that the person doing the sub-titles got bored with having nothing to do. I mean why else would you attempt to translate things like "aagh", or "yaaaaagh"? It was really quite amusing to read these. I don't need to understand Chinese in order to interpret a Chinese person screaming. It was very bizarre.
» Shopping
Well that was an expensive outing! Just got home from suit shopping and now I'm broke! Roll on my first payday. Managed to get a couple of really nice suits, not that two are going to last long, I'm going to have to go back and repeat this whole thing very soon. I was really happy to find a great menswear shop though with a really switched on guy who knew his stuff. Looked me up and down a picked out exactly the right size straight off, no mucking about trying on five things to find the right one.

I must say though, damn I look good in a suit. ;-) Not that you would necessarily think that to look at me normally, but there you go, can't judge a book (or in this case geek) by it's cover.
» I got a job!
Woohoo, I finally got a good job offer today. After many years of study and four months of job hunting it's all going to start paying off. I am so incredibly and totally stoked right now. So I am now officially a Graduate Consultant (in software solutions/development).

It was really a case of accepting the first job offer that was any good, simply so I could get into the industry and get some experience. If the job turned out to be crap I was planning on sticking it out for 12 months and then look at moving. Experience is everything! But thankfully as it turns out this company seems to be really good, with plenty of room for movement and growth. So hopefully I will stick it out with them for some time. If nothing else they are cashed up, I have never worked for a company that actually has surpluss cash.

The building I am working in is in the city and smack on top of the train station, so nice and easy. No need to go outside during winter. Not to mention I have to walk straight past a Borders store each and every day, now that will suck! Not! God my SO used to hate my book budget when I travelled on the train, it's probably a good thing I'll be earning so much more now, I'm going to need it.

In a weird new theory, Lars Ulrich, Melallica drummer and all round tosser, is believed to be the love child of Billy Joel. Don't believe me? You decide: Lars Ulrish, and Billy Joel. Huh, spooky isn't it. Not so stupid now am I.

Spooky but true.

I feel so stressed! [info]bruised_heel said they wanted to go to a concert but they changed their mind :-(.

What sucks is that Thursday at school I got in a huge fight with [info]sunlikeblood.

And also I don't know why [info]thatgothgrrl went all psycho over me and [info]beckerbuns having a little fun.

Oh and I gave everybody my wishlist of computer hardware for my birfday, but nobody bought me anything :-(.

Hey and know what? the other day was my birthday and nobody noticed or gave me presents or wished me happy birthday :-(.

Oh yeah. someone at work found out I was into anime and I think that's why I got fired :-(.

I just couldn't be bothered today. I'm tired and bored and it's too hot outside to do any of the jobs i was planning. So instead I will sit here infront of my computer, listen to some cool tunes, and bash away at the keyboard and amuse myself.

Lalalalalalala... Bored...

Hey I was watching the world news the other night and I have come to the conclusion that to be a world leader you must fit into one of three standard moulds. These are:

  1. The normal looking dope: This is the leader who looks like a normal everyday guy/girl. The kind of person that you instinctively like and trust. The problem is this category of person is also a complete dope, totally incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together, let alone running a country. How they come to power: similing like the cheshire cat and kissing babies a lot!

  2. The capable throwback: This leader is the one who can and usually does get the job done, and does it regardless of whether the decisions are popular. The drawback of this category is that they look like some kind of genetic throwback. Intelligent and capable? Yes most definitely. Looks like they just crawled out the primordial swamp and learnt to walk upright. Shit yes!

  3. The gun totting thug: Yep there's no stop to what you can acheive with a small well equipped army that are happy to shot and pistol whip even their owns mothers. I hesitate to call this one a world leader, because they really aren't leading anyone. This is just thuggery at is most extreme.

So there you have it. Got dream of world domination? Well unless you fit into one of these categories, forget it. You have no hope of ever coming to power.

OK now a gripe. Why is it that music players for computers that come with preset equalizers all have really shitty settings? Playing around with the preset levels on Windows Media Player and I don't think the people that make these have a clue. I've got Mettalica on so I give the "metal" setting a try. It's so tinny it's awful. At least listen to some metal when you create the levels and make sure it's OK for cryin' out loud.

OK well that passed a few minutes...

P.S. Somewhere out there in this big bright world of ours there's a guy called Nigel who is having a </i>really</i> bad day. Spare a thought for poor old Nigel today as you go about you're busy life.

P.P.S. Feel free to post links to stupid timewasting websites. PLEASE.

» OMG what have I done.
Well after years of resisting, I have finally succumbed to the lure that is eBay. I was in the garage the other day and spied some old board games (RPG type ones) from many years ago, stuff that I was very close to throwing in the bin some time ago. These are all games that you can’t buy anymore, but regardless of that fact I really didn’t think they were worth anything and certainly not worth keeping. I sure as shit won’t be playing them again; God the amount of time we used to spend playing this type of thing. So anyway I thought what the hell, lets give eBay a try on just one of them and see what happens. Well I have it listed and it’s made its way to $26 so far, but there is still 7-8 days left, so plenty of time for bidding to increase yet. There is actually 7 people watching the item, so I do expect it to go up in price more. But, and this is what has me dumbfounded, people spend the most ridiculous amounts of money on crap. I mentioned I have several of these games but I’ve only listed one for now. Well as it happens several other people have listed one of the other titles I have here. One of these auctions finished over the weekend for an astounding $61! Another still has a day or so left, but is up to $81. I didn’t pay that much for the game brand new, and that was about 17 years ago. All I can say is that I will most definitely be cleaning more crap out of the garage, there much money here. I figure with the titles I have here there's several hundred dollars minimum I can make here, and to think I was that close to throwing the whole lot in the bin!

I'm currently read "Vernon God Little" and found this passage quite amusing. Now tell me honestly you don't have to deal with several of these "spazzos" on a daily basis. Had to share:

I sense a learning: that much dumber people than you end up in charge. Look at the way things are. I'm no fucken genius or anything, but these spazzos are in charge of my every twitch. What I'm starting to think is maybe only the dumb are safe in this world, the ones who roam with the herd, without thinking about every little thing. But see me? I have to think about every little fucken thing.

» My little boy is not so little anymore!
Scary parent day, my little boy started school today. All of the preps look so small in their school uniforms with their huge school bags. Very cute though. He is so tired at the end of the day though, not sure how is going to make it through an entire week. My god how did we get to this age so quickly.

Another scary thought: No job yet and it only takes a few hours each day to catch up on the job listings, so what the hell am I going to do with my days now he is at school? My thoughts so far include getting the bike out again and starting to get back into shape, or, watching Oprah and doing the bored house wife (husband) thing and getting drunk every afternoon. Hehe, not really. Anyone need any custom software solutions at a very competitive price?
